The Tutor Center reopened its doors this week to offer free tutoring sessions in the Texan Hall Conference Room and the Centennial Village Sky Room.

Tutors offer help with subjects, such as biology, government, history, business, communications and many other subjects.

"I come for help and the good environment," sophomore Felicia Villarreal said.

Students are seen on a walk-in basis, and individual tutoring sessions last 30 minutes.

"The mission of the ASU Tutor Center is to offer free and voluntary access to academic assistance," said Sara Weertz, director of Supplemental Instruction, "and to motivate students to succeed by actively involving them in the course material and engaging them in the learning process outside of class."

Tutors do not provide answers for students or do their homework for them. However, tutors are there to explain concepts, rules and methods that students don't understand.

"The tutors make everything easier to understand," freshmen Rachel Chan said.

Weertz also stresses that each student come equipped with all necessary materials, such as textbooks and class notes, and have their specific questions prepared for the tutors.

"The tutors provide study skills, strategies and techniques to promote critical thinking and time management," Weertz said.

Students needing assistance in math, writing or modern languages are referred to the Writing Center, Math Lab and Modern Languages department, respectively.

"The University believes that students should be able to take advantage of all of the ways they can receive academic assistance," Weertz said.
