James Valentine, the lead guitarist for Maroon 5, is participating in ticket giveaways for their Saturday, Nov. 21 performance by challenging ASU fans to a match of tennis.

Throughout the tour, Valentine will be using the Maroon 5 twitter to announce when and where he'll be challenging tennis players to a few sets.

Senior Jake Hoelting said he is up for the challenge.

"I'd like to show him why I own two state championships in tennis," he said. "It'd be a really cool experience."

Adam Levine, the band's lead man, will also use his personal twitter account to give his followers unique ways to win tickets to the show. Fans are encouraged to follow him at twitter.com/adamlevine.

The Grammy Award-winning Maroon 5 will play Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

The concert will be the 10th of 11 stops on the group's nationwide "Back to School" tour of U.S. college campuses in advance of the release of their third album next year.

Valentine said the fall tour would be an opportunity to hit up smaller towns not included in their previous tour, as well as a chance to perform for college audiences, like they had earlier in their career.

"There's just a certain energy at those shows that's definitely not there at the regular, civilian shows," Valentine said.

And, he said, the group is appreciative to the support students have given them.

"The college audience is really important in any success we've had," Valentine said.

The contests don't end at winning tickets for the show-Maroon 5 recently announced the $15K Starving Student challenge on their Web site.

The challenge gives a concertgoer $15,000 for a winning video taken at a Maroon 5 show.

Concertgoers are required to video themselves at the show and submit it to twitvid.com/maroon5. The winner is picked at the end of the tour.

Because ASU was unable to get a concert for the spring semester, there was more money available in the budget than usual, UCPC Entertainment Chairperson Sam Mendoza said.

Mendoza said results of research over the summer by the entertainment committee, in addition to other factors, such as timing and availability of funds, made the Maroon 5 concert viable.

Tickets went on sale Monday, Sept. 28 for students and Maroon 5 fan club members and were available to the general public Friday, Oct. 9.

Tickets are available online at www.tickets.angelo.edu and at the Junell Center ticket office and the University Center Program Council information desk from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ASU students can get tickets for $10 with a limit of two and $30 for each additional ticket.

Tickets for general public are $30 each.

"It's different from a lot of concerts of the past because they're more well known," Mendoza said. "It's a different ballgame."
