The first Sunday of May will mark the 23rd annual softball game between the Student Government Association vs. ASU's faculty and staff and both sides of the rivalry are teeming with predictions of this year's outcome.
"I see that there is a 30 percent chance of rain on Sunday, so I would say there is a 70 percent chance [the] Faculty/Staff will maintain its winning streak," Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. Karl Havlak said.
Former Student Body President Seth Chomout, who participated in last year's game predicted otherwise.
"The faculty and staff are going down," Chomout said.
In the 23-year history of the event, it would be only the second win for the SGA.
"In the past, they (the faculty) have killed the students," Chomout said. "Last year they only beat us by one point. This year we're hoping to change that"
Special Events Facilities / Services Director Greg Pecina, who has been involved in all 22 previous games, enjoys getting the students, staff and faculty together.
"Even after 27 years working here I manage to meet someone new every year we do this," he said.
Both Chomout and Pecina agree that last year's game was competitively the closest seen in a while, with the SGA losing by a mere point.
"The competitive nature of everyone involved is amplified when the students start talking trash," Pecina said. "I always tell the Staff/Faculty team that we're not out here to win or lose, but it is more fun to win."
Pecina said he looks forward to winning his 22nd Championship T-shirt.
"The SGA must have a closet full of the 'I Participated' T-shirts," Pecina said. "We have a lot of fun doing this and it makes for a great tradition. As for the past student body president's quote that we're 'going down,' we'll just have to let our bats do the talking next Sunday."
The game is scheduled for Sunday, May 3 from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the ASU/SAY Baseball Complex, 4565 Arden Road, located between the Bluffs and Jim Bass Ford.
