Track teams continue hot start

Throwers from the Angelo State track and field team placed first and second at the March 7 Border Olympics in Laredo.
Senior Culley Jo Dawson won the discus event with a 163'5'' throw. With a score of 162'6'', senior Adree Lakey placed second in the event.
Lakey also made a record toss of 51'3 ¾'' on the shot put, breaking her own set in 2006 as a freshman.
The men of the team brought home bragging rights with Wade Goode, who improved his provisional mark in the shot put with a winning throw of 53'11".
In the discus, Chad Schaertl and David Browne both recorded provisional qualifying marks. Schaertl placed second with a throw of 170'9" while Browne placed fourth with a throw of 164'2". Nick Alejandro also placed fourth in shot put with a provisional qualifying throw of 52'8 1/4".
Aisha Adams started strong with an automatic mark in the triple jump. Adams won the event with a wind-aided jump of 40'6 3/4", but did record a jump of 40'1 1/4" with a legal wind in a previous jump. Adams also won the long jump at the Border Olympics with a wind-aided mark of 19'5 1/4".
At the March 5 meet at Tarleton State, Adams broke ASU's 24-year-old high jump record with a mark of 5'10". Donna McGill had set the previous mark of 5'8'' in 1985 for ASU. Adams also placed second in the 100 hurdles at the Thursday meet.
High jumper Ryan Adkins recorded the top performance in the event by a Ram this season with a leap of 6'4 3/4".
The Rams and Rambelles will host the ASU Spring Break Multi-Events, Mar. 19-20, at the LeGrand Sports Complex after taking this weekend off.
