Among the bustle of construction and expansion around ASU is a smaller addition within the campus this year - an 8-member womens golf team.

"We are volunteering our time for two years to get the program up and running," said Jimmy Tidwell, one of the team's co-head coaches. "There was a need to bring back a golf team to Angelo State."

The last year a student represented ASU on the green was in the spring of 1982, for the mens golf team, said Dave Wester, sports information director. The golf program was removed along with three other sports because of changes in the athletic department, he said.

Tidwell, director of golf at Bentwood Country Club, and Jason Hase, director of golf at San Angelo Country Club volunteered their time to be the new team's co-head coaches. The pair approached the athletic director and worked to bring a golf team back to campus.

"The (university) women's programs are highly competitive across the board," Hase said. "The golf program shouldn't be any different. As the university grows, it would be awesome to add a few other sports."

The team consists of five freshman and three juniors, Hase said.

"We went to different places around the state and tried to find girls just like any other sports program," he said. "There's probably been about a 100 interested in the program."

Hase said the eight girls were chosen out of a group of about 50 other golfers.

One of the team members, freshman Megan Cisneroz, has been playing golf since she was ten years old.

She was planning on attending ASU before she learned of the golf program, she said. The university having a golf program was a just a big bonus, the San Saba native said.

"I was really excited," Cisneroz said. "I love it a lot. I think we're going to be a really good team. There are a lot of really good girls on the team."

Cisneroz played for her high school golf team and has won several awards.

"I was the regional champion and placed fifth at state," she said.

The ASU womens golf team will compete in four tournaments this fall in Oklahoma and in the North Texas area.

"If we can get off to a good start, better play will get you into better tournaments," Tidwell said. "We're hoping we get invited to more tournaments after we prove that we're serious about the sport."
