Baseball marchs through conference play
Taking care of spring cleaning came easy to the Rams over the break.
With a series sweep over the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds and a series win over the West Texas A&M Buffalos, the Rams completed their chore list while remaining first in the Lone Star Conference standings.
During the break, the Rams went 8-1, with their only loss in a 19-18 shootout against the Buffs.
Against WTAMU, offense was not a problem for the Rams as they set a school record of 26 runs following their loss to the Buffs the previous day.
The team was led with performances from senior designated hitter Don Carter who scored four times during the game.
The team rounded out the doubleheader with a 7-2 victory and a 17-2 win the next day to finish out the series.
In the series against the Greyhounds, the Rams found similar successes.
The team opened up the series with a strong 12-1 victory over ENMU. After scoring a run in the first three innings, the team blasted in six scores in the fourth frame to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
During the next three games, the Rams posted similar outcomes with 7-4 and 10-1 victories in a doubleheader and an 8-3 win to close out the series.
"We did a good job of doing some little things, getting some hits when we needed to, moving runners, that type of stuff," Coach Kevin Brooks said. "We just never got a bunch of hits in a row and got a big inning."
With their strong performances over the break, the previously No. 25 ranked Rams crawled up to the No. 20 best team in the nation.
The Rams will continue conference play with the University of Central Oklahoma coming to town. Matches are set for 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, followed by a doubleheader the next day at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Rams will close out the series at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Foster Field.
Softball crawls to No. 3 team in nation
With the midpoint of the season approaching, the Rambelles have climbed to the No. 3 ranked team in the nation.
The new poll was revealed after the 'Belles won a two-game set against the No. 23 ranked St. Edwards Hilltoppers and a 2-1 series victory over the West Texas A&M Lady Buffalos.
After their lone 11-3 loss to the Lady Buffs, the 'Belles followed the match with a 12-0 clobbering against WTAMU.
"We came out and showed them that everyone has an off day, and when we really play we can beat anybody," senior Liena Braxton said.
After the new rankings were released, the team went on to sweep the Incarnate Word Cardinals in a two-game series. Senior Kari Galm (16-1) pitched a shutout to help the 'Belles win the first match 4-0. In the second game, the score was knotted up 1-1 until the team went on a four-run fourth inning to ensure the win.
The team will face its highest-ranked opponent in Southeastern Oklahoma when the team competes in the LSC Crossover Tournament. Heading into the tournament, the No. 8 ranked Storm lead the LSC North division with a 7-1 record.
