The event, held at the UC C.J. Davidson Conference Center, included free giveaways, free food and prizes for those who came with game faces normally reserved for the blackjack tables of Sin City.
Tuesday night, Oct. 23, the program that the UCPC had been organizing since last fall, saw its third successful showing.
"I was a part of the committee, but Nathan Lopez actually started it," sophomore UCPC Recreation Chairperson Lainee Fagafa said. "We usually have a lot of people come out or people will walk by and see what's going on and sign up."
The tournament was free for students to play and featured plenty of prizes and free giveaways. The top seven finishers received gift cards to Best Buy, with the first-place finisher cashing in on a $100 gift card. Also given away in a random drawing was a new iPod Nano, won by freshman Kailee Leabo.
"It was definitely unexpected," Leabo said. "I just put my name in the bowl like everyone else not thinking anything of it until they announced my name."
The event started off with tables of eight and worked its way down as the night progressed and people were eliminated. Each participant was given $1,500 in chips, with red being worth $50, white $100, blue $500, green $1,000 and black $5,000.
While some players came ready to win it all, most were just out to have fun and enjoy the on-the-house experience, which meant free food and drinks, while meeting other poker players that attend Angelo State University.
"The best part was that it was free," freshman Art Artega said. Artega, who has been playing poker for four years also sarcastically added: "(My sunglasses) gave me no advantages what so ever… I was the third one out at my table, but it was still a fun night."
Rules for the tournament were put in place to ensure the event was all about a good time and did not feature betting of any sort. These rules included: No profanity, no splashing (throwing chips into the pot), no string betting (players must make it known they are going to raise before the bet is placed), no side bets and no real money on the table.
In addition, Chartwell's - the provider of food for Angelo State - supplied an assortment of free food while UCPC members served ice cold beverages, offering students even more enjoyment at a college-style price.
"I think the turnout is awesome," senior Aisha Johnns said.
"It's a little bit more than last year."
She also was impressed by the way Fagafa organized the event, especially the addition of the colored shirts which differentiated those who were working the tournament from those taking part in it.
The next UCPC "Ram Hold 'em" Poker Tournament is set for the spring, which grants ASU students another chance to experience a festive evening and deals them a winning hand, no matter how many chips they win.
